Bacteriostatic Water for Injection (BWFI) is a sterile, non-pyrogenic aqueous preparation containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol (9 mg/mL) as a bacteriostatic preservative, prepared in accordance with United States Pharmacopeia (USP) standards. The 0.9% benzyl alcohol concentration inhibits microbial growth, enabling multi-dose use of reconstituted research solutions when stored under appropriate conditions. The 0.9% benzyl alcohol preservative provides antimicrobial protection through membrane disruption of microbial cells. For peptide reconstitution research, BWFI is preferred over plain sterile water because it extends the usable life of reconstituted solutions when stored refrigerated (2-8°C) and used within 28 days. Research compounds should be reconstituted by injecting BWFI along the vial wall, gently swirling (never vortexing), and allowing complete dissolution before use.
