BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound 157; Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val) is a synthetic 15-amino acid pentadecapeptide derived from a partial sequence of human gastric juice protein BPC. It was first isolated and characterized by Predrag Sikiric and colleagues at the University of Zagreb School of Medicine, with primary research output beginning in the early 1990s.
Published research from the Zagreb group and independent investigators has examined BPC-157 across musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, and neurological tissue models. Chang, Tsai, and colleagues at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital characterized BPC-157’s promotion of tendon cell outgrowth, survival, and migration in an in vitro tendon injury model and in vivo rat tendon rupture model (2011). Sikiric and co-investigators have described activity in gastric mucosal protection, NSAID-induced organ damage counteraction, and bone and ligament healing models across multiple preclinical studies. Oral administration of BPC-157 has been examined in several rodent gastrointestinal and systemic models. All findings referenced here derive from preclinical models and have not been validated in controlled human clinical trials.
